Any random 20-minute slice of D4 has more inventiveness than 20 hours of Shadow of Mordor. After playing Shadow of Mordor, I downloaded D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die, a baffling, David Lynch-ian game for the Xbox One that uses the motion controls and voice recognition of Microsoft’s Kinect sensor. Still, it’s hard to take too much joy in something this derivative. Shadow of Mordor is likely to sell millions of copies and be honored with many sequels. Sneaking through a stronghold to force the bodyguard of an orc leader to betray his master is pure video game pleasure. Taken as a game about finding targets and plotting their demise, it is better than the Assassin’s Creed games it imitates - more intense, more strategic, more unpredictable. Shadow of Mordor sometimes rises above the material it plunders (or, if you’re feeling generous, pays homage to). The exploration is pure Assassin’s Creed: clambering up towers to unlock portions of a map, which is dotted with hidden relics, optional missions and mysterious graffiti. The fighting seems to be lifted directly from the Arkham games (which are, to be fair, also published by Warner Bros.), if you ignore the addition of a bow and arrow.
